The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, Eph 1:18

The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Thessalonians church prayed that their understanding (soul) may be preserved till the coming o the Lord 1 Thess 5:23. The understanding is crucial to living a balanced and purposeful life till the Lord comes or till death and that is why it needs to be preserved.

A balanced living is one in which there is a maximal inter functionality of the Spirit, Soul (Understanding) and the Body and only God can help us do that, to the dividing asunder of the spirit and soul and of the bones and marrow Heb 4:12. Balance as a believer is when you are able to understand the role of the understanding and its application in daily life. An understanding of the understanding helps to place things, events and people accordingly in God’s perfect will.

The understanding is the faculty of man that governs the reason and reasoning of man. The understanding, otherwise called the mind, intellect, is the part of the human soul that questions any and everything that you come across. Man is a reasoning being, we live by reason and reasoning and that is why there is an explanation for everything that you do, wise or otherwise, this is what sets us apart from animals.

Paul admonished the church in Ephesus that it is unwise, not to understand the will of God. In other words, the will of God mustn’t just be known, it must be understood be ye not unwise but understanding what the will of the Lord is Eph 5:18. You need to understand the understanding.

About the Understanding

The understanding is programmed by God.

And breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul Gen 2:7: When man was formed, he had a body, but it was unable to interact with the seen and unseen world, more like a statue till the Spirit of God bore man’s spirit into man through His nostrils. The entrance of the Spirit gave life to man and he became a living soul. The understanding was triggered by the Spirit of God, and that ought to be the pattern, such mind or understanding is called the spiritual mind, or a mind that understand the will of God as opposed to the carnal mind.

The understanding is a blessing

The understanding is a blessing as it represents the beauty of God’s brilliance in his description of how he wants man to function. Knowledge only sits deeply when the understanding is a full measure. Solomon knew how much good the understanding would do to man if well understood and applied to  fullness, he counseled thus, and with all your getting, understanding…Pr 4:7
