Zech 9.9 "Rejoice greatly,
O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh
unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and
upon a colt the foal of an ass."
Matthew quoted the prophet Zechariah in his
account of this event. Perhaps being one of the original twelve apostles would
mean that he had firsthand experienced the events, Mark and Luke wrote their
accounts based on what was passed on to them. I believe that all accounts are
complementary in some way as stated here.
The earliest reference to both an ass and
its colt mentioned in the bible is found in Gen 49, where the patriarch, Jacob
gathered his sons and prophetically charted their courses. "10 The sceptre
shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh
come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. 11 Binding his foal
unto the vine, and his ass's colt unto the choice vine." Among many believers, Shiloh is believed to reference
Christ.
The centralized leadership and law shall continue in Judah till Shiloh shows up.
The people would be gathered to Shiloh (Christ),
this happened when he rode into Jerusalem and everyone came to see Him. As Jesus ascended toward Jerusalem, a
large multitude gathered around Him, this crowd understood that Jesus was the
Messiah.
Then as a sign, an ass (signifying people) would
be tied to Him, also, an ass's colt (also people) unto the choice vine (He). In
other words, both would be tied to Him. He would be central to the two,
however, he would have a preference in the second. Same He in different
dispensations Heb
13:8, manifesting preference of one over
the other. These two people types represent the old and new covenant.
The ass represents people, old and new covenant.
The latter is better than the former. But it is the same Lord that works in
both. What the word of God revealed to Moses (before Shiloh came was the law,
hence Moses), the people (the ass) needed to be bound to and what the word of
God revealed to the disciples, the people (colt) needed to bind to.
So, Jesus had something to do with both could
mean that He rode upon both, probably at different, times in the journey. Some
bible scholars argue that Mark, Luke, and John talked about one but didn't say
only one.
So today, we represent the colt that Jesus rides
into our world, and it signifies the triumphant entry of Jesus into lives,
families, situations, peoples, and nations today through our vessel (us) 2
