The Lord is my Shepherd...
On the night that Jesus was born, there was in the same country, shepherds abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flock.
These Shepherds had an unforgettable encounter, probably the first in their lives, the angel of the Lord visited them with the news of the newborn king.
One question that propped up in my mind ten years ago was why Shepherds? I had felt that this visit should have been to nobles, princes, kings, wise men, priests, and/or scribes.
The answer that I perceived was that:
It was to remind us in part, 'the ministry Jesus'. He was to become the great shepherd, the good shepherd, the shepherd and bishop of our souls.
Now, it might not be easy for many people in today's world to comprehend the significance of the truth behind Jesus being our Shepherd because shepherds are hardly seen or relevant these days.
People in Israel understood the images and roles of a shepherd as one who would sacrificially and devotedly lead the sheep.
He would lay His life down for us, guide us, and restore us. This describes what Jesus would later be to us
Peter described Jesus as the shepherd and the bishop of our souls. Read more about the Lord being our shepherd here
