Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keep the law? Why go ye about to kill me ? Jn 7:19
The feast of tabernacles was approaching; the Jews were excited and looked forward to it. Jesus was a central figure at the time, both loved and hated by different camps of thought. He was deemed controversial because of his stance on issues of faith, morality and governance. This would not be far from some patterns today.
Jesus could not even walk openly in nucleated Jewish settlements at the time because of sentiments and biases against him, the radicals sought to kill him, it was that bad.
Jesus made it to the feast anonymously, he even delivered an astounding sermon to the utter amazement of all, a feat only the best of the elites could pull off. In His further interaction at the meeting, he had to address people and issues, and this line caught my attention ‘Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keep the law?
They were hypocrites:
They were experts in quoting the law and in following traditions but were never true to the ideals of the law. They practiced only openly with the intent of showmanship and to exercise control over people. They wanted to be honoured by men.
They had little or no understanding of the law:
Their response to the law showed that they lacked understanding of the law of God. They followed God religiously but there was no religion in their heart, tradition had replaced faith. They were so unlearned in the things of the faith and in the knowledge of the person of God. They rejected Christ because they never really knew God.
The law of the Lord is perfect, converting
the soul; The testimony of
the Lord is sure,
making wise the simple; Ps 19:7
God's laws are to be kept because we love and trust the Lord and because they are perfect and are in our best interest. While the laws of the old testament were primarily the Moral laws, Civil laws, and Ceremonial laws; the law in the New Testament is the law of the Spirit, of Life in Christ Jesus Rom 8:2.
The New Testament law isn't about a new set of rules or a long list of Do's and Don'ts, it is an impression of love and trust. Do you love the Lord? do you trust Him,? do you keep His laws? if no, you are shooting yourself in the leg, you are allowing the devil the space of dominance in your life.
God bless you
