Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy, Ps 107:2
Redemption is the act of buying something back or paying a
price or ransom to return something to your possession. It also means to buy
out, a term specifically used in reference to the purchase of something. The application of this term to Christ’s
death on the cross is quite telling. If we are redeemed, then our prior
condition was one of slavery.
Redemption is the English translation of the Greek
word agorazo, meaning "to purchase in the
marketplace." In ancient times, it often referred to the act of buying a
slave. It carried the meaning of freeing someone from chains, prison, or
slavery.
Another Greek word connected with redemption is lutroo, meaning "to obtain release by the payment of a price". The price (or ransom), in Christianity, was Christ's precious blood, obtaining our release from sin and death.
The Christian use of redemption means Jesus Christ, through his sacrificial
death purchased believers from the
slavery of sin to set us free from bondage. Jesus himself, the Son of
God, said that he came to give himself as a ransom for many ...even as the Son
of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for
many." (Matthew 20:28, ESV)
The New Bible Dictionary gives
this definition: "Redemption means deliverance from some evil by payment
of a price."
WHO NEEDS
REDEMPTION
For all have sinned...Rom 3:23. Every person born into this world needs redemption because of sin nature inherited from Adam Rom 5:12) and by choice (If any man sin… 1 Jn1:9). The redemption of Christ frees sinners
from guilt, being “justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is
in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24.
Once redeemed, one needs to live in the knowledge of the
liberty wherein Christ has made one free and not be entangled again with the yoke of sin, needing redemption over
THE
PROCESS
When
Jesus died, he did something very significant. He died to take your place. He
stood where you deserve to stand. He hung where you deserve to hang. He died
the death that you deserve to die. He fully, personally, and directly received
on himself the punishment that you rightly deserve to receive for your own
sins. But instead of you receiving this punishment for yourself, Jesus became
your substitute. He took your place. He received on him the punishment that you
deserve. We need to know that the redemptive at was motivated by love Jn 3:16.
No love is greater than this, that a man should die for his friends. We are friends of Christ Jesus if we do all he commanded us to do.
