As Jesus rode into Jerusalem, people rejoiced greatly, but what
was the cause of their celebration? Many knew by prophecy that a king would
come and would liberate Israel from the Roman occupation/oppression/rule that
existed at the time. They understood that
Jesus was the Messiah; what they did not understand was that it wasn’t time to
set up the kingdom as yet though Jesus had tried to tell them so Luke 19:11-12
These people were so impassioned on this day,
that many people spread their garments on the ground, some cut palm
fronds John 12:13 and lined the way for the donkey to
walk on, Mt 21:8. In spreading their clothes on the road, the people were
giving Jesus the same royal treatment, that was given to King Jehu when he was
coronated King. 2 Kings 9:13. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that
followed shouted, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!’ ‘Blessed is he who comes in
the name of the Lord!’ ‘Hosanna in the highest heaven!’ Mt 21:9. They quoted Psalm 118:25–26, acknowledging by prophecy that he was the Christ.
Hossana
Literally means Save now, Help now. In other words, salvation is
now, deliverance is now, help us now, however, Jesus had warned beforehand that
the salvation that they needed wasn’t political emancipation, they needed to be
free from sin. Their expectation of Him motivated their wild jubilation, but
this would not distract him, instead, it helps Him to stay focused on the
mission as He understood the message, ‘Salvation is now, deliverance is now,
help is now.
SO there are two parts, firstly, a people that had just partial understanding of the truth and were rejoicing in hope of deliverance from political oppression and the second part that had Jesus stirred by His passion and that’s why, “as (Jesus) approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, ‘If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies . . . will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you” Luke 19:41–47 at the beginning of what would now be referred to as the passion week.
Do you understand the message of Christ? Perhaps, if those folks
did, it would have panned out a little differently. Why do you follow Jesus?
what is the motivation for your celebration of Him? Many today follow Him
merely for material blessings, protection et al and miss His main aim. Easter
is about God reconciling the world to Himself through the sacrifice of His son,
Jesus Christ 2 Corr 5:19
There is yet the chant 'Hossana' today, however, many sing, but
miss the message.
Honestly, we that dwelt in the world needs salvation now!
