Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Jn 3:3

Being born again refers to the new birth, it is receiving God’s eternal life into our spirits, this new birth is the second birth, not natural, but a spiritual birth into the family of God by the Holy Spirit, making us children of God ‘for that which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Biologically, like begets like, this experience makes us to become like God, ‘to them He gave the power to become the children of God’ being His children, we were redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ and adopted by the Holy Spirit, Rom 8:15. The spirit of man is what really changes at the new birth, it is the centre of operations for the Spirit, it is where God will work from; that is why the spirit is the focus at the new birth.

According to Lk 1:35, the new birth is accomplished by the power of the most high when the Holy Spirit overshadows us like He did in brooding upon the earth in genesis, he broods and imparts the word of truth (word of life or the incorruptible seed, 1 Pet 1:23 which is Jesus into us), this power recreates us and makes us new persons in Christ and we become children of God and are purified by the abiding word of God. This birth according to Jesus, is not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God; Jn 1: 13 the new birth afforded us the opportunity to regain what was lost in Adam.

Other words that describe this experience are: being born of the word of truth Ja 1:2; being born of God 1 Jn 3:9;  being born of the incorruptible seed 1 pet 1:23; birth by the word of God: it is a birth by the will of God Jn 1:11-13; birth by the Spirit Jn 3:6; These words point to the same thing, they help us to understand in clearer details what regeneration or being born again is and help us to see the place of the trinity and every member of the trinity as being responsible for our salvation.

Are you born again?
