Pray without ceasing
1 Thess 5:17
A lot has been written about the
subject of prayer and a lot more would still be written.
We
are enjoined to pray without stopping, this means that we must be in a
never-ending communion with God. The good thing is there are no special rules
and God is ever-present and available for us and to us.
Many years back, as a young believer, I
decided that I would pray like never before. I wanted to pray for about 20
minutes, which to me was a big deal and a feat worth achieving. As I closed my
eyes and set out about my mission, I encountered my first challenge, I didn’t
know what to ask or how to pray, however, I said all the words that I knew,
hoping that I had spent all the time that there was. This feeling of
self-satisfaction had enraptured me until I opened my eyes and beheld the
actual; I was surprised to find out that I had spent just about 5 minutes. It
was a disappointing experience for me, I felt I had spent all the time and said
everything that I knew that there was to say. I didn’t actually achieve much that
day, but it was a foundation for what would today become a prayer fellowship
with the Lord. Those were the little beginnings and aren’t to be despised,
because they laid the foundation for today.
It is needful to note that to pray
right isn’t about the length of prayer, the type of prayer, or the place of
prayer. What governs rightful prayer is the heart that moves prayer; this heart
is that which has been made right (eous). The right heart governs the rightful
positioning of the other factors that aid praying right.
The
Lessons
1. Prayer is compulsory just as is
communication to every relationship
2. God is more willing to hear from you
than you are ever willing to reach out
3. You grow in prayer through use
(consistency)
4. The more you pray, the more you
can pray
