The gifts that the Magi offered the newborn baby Jesus: Gold, Incense, and Myrrh. These three gifts were all considered extremely expensive luxury articles, which were imported. They were important because they spelled quite accurately the course of the child's life.
The wise men had visited the palace of King Herod firstly because they knew the child was a king and had to be born into royalty and secondly because they were highly revered men who functioned as advisers and counselors to kings and rulers.
The message of the gifts was simple
'He would be a great king who would also be a deity deserving worship, however, he would pay the ultimate sacrifice of death in the service of His people'
The Wisemen told king Herod plainly that they have come to worship 'Him' (the new born) and they di when they met Him.
The Magi might not have understood the depth of this message in its entirety but this peripheral does speak volume.
The life of Jesus was an extremely sacrificial life, while we were not commanded to celebrate Christmas, entering into a personal relationship with Christ is the biggest takeaway and purpose of Christmas.
